Swami vishnudevananda gave to us the 12 basic asanas which form the foundation of our Hatha Yoga practice. Becoming grounded in these asanas leads to great physcial, mental and spiritual benefits.

However paying attention to the nature of the mind one can observe it has a tendency to fall into complacency, laziness and doubt time and again. This leads to many obstacles like reduced focus, letting go of the practice and reduced motivation as the mind is not there yet and begins to rebel.

Swami Vishnudevananda hence used the advance asanas which are beautiful variations of the 12 basic asanas to challenge the mind and throw it out of its comfort zone.

This when attempted at some times in your practice , helps build concentration, challenge one self and also instills tremendous amount of confidence once there is understanding in the practice.

The aim is not to run and chase after the fancy things the body can do and get stuck on a physical level in the practice but to beautifully transition into variations that helps the mind step out of comfort and lethargy. See what your body can do, motivate yourself and further your practice in a grounded way.
