The Story
The Pandavas, after the terrible war of the Mahabharata, had incurred the sin of killing their own kinsmen. To atone this sin and ask for salvation, they were guided to pray to Lord Shiva. However, Lord Shiva was not desirous of meeting them. Therefore he went underground- gupta in Sanskrit means secret. He actually hid from them. However, the Pandavas pursued him. They prayed to Goddess Parvati, consort of Shiva and she was delighted by their prayers and requested Lord Shiva to meet them. However, he appeared in front of them in the form of ‘Ardhanarishwar’ meaning a combination of Shiva and Parvati, half man and half woman. This symbolism signifies the feminine and masculine sides in every human – the right and left side of the brain, the Moon and the Sun, creative and logical aspects of human being.
There is a temple called Vishwanath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva here. In the same premises there is a temple of ‘Ardhanarishwar’.
